Johannesburg - Five people were killed and eight injured in an accident involving a minibus taxi and a car on the Kamagugu road in Nelspruit on Friday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said five people were declared dead on the scene. The injured people were transported to a nearby hospital.

"The driver of an Opel Corsa lost control of the car, which spun around and swerved onto the side of the oncoming traffic. The taxi hit it from the side."

Mpumalanga community safety spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said police investigations were continuing.

"We are entering into a busy week on the roads with Easter weekend coming up - we urge motorists to adhere to the road rules at all times, and to check your vehicles before embarking on trips," he said.

I drive that road everyday and boy let me tell you,the people drive like maniacs. The speed limit for that road is 80 but MOST of the drivers do at LEAST 120. They don't care if there is a blind corner or oncoming traffic, and you get sweared at for not pulling over even if there is no space to do so.that road is a nightmare and the bane of my existence,I learn new swear words every morning.I'm surprised not more people are killed everyday
