Cape Town - Four primary school pupils and a bus driver died on Thursday when the single-decker vehicle overturned in Kloofnek Road in Cape Town.
Another 25 pupils from an unknown primary school suffered various injuries, said deputy city traffic chief Heathcliff Thomas.
He said the bus was travelling towards the city centre when it apparently clipped the sidewalk down the steep Kloofnek Road around 14:00.
Part of Kloofnek Road near Quarry Hill remained closed by 15:30 as the accident scene was secured.
Metro emergency doctor Cleeve Robertson, said four of the grade 7 pupils, all aged 12 to 13 years, were in a serious condition.
He said the jaws-of-life were used to extricate some of the pupils.
"Where children are injured it is very emotive," he said, adding that three doctors and several paramedics were at the scene.
