5 die as car 'split in half' in crash

2012-04-27 07:43

Johannesburg - Five people died when their car crashed into a tree before hitting a wall in the south of Johannesburg on Thursday, said Johannesburg metro police.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 35-year-old woman driving a white BMW, lost control of the car on the main road in Naturena.

She and her passengers, four men in their 30s, died.

"The impact of the accident was so great that the car split into two halves," said Minnaar.

He said two pedestrians were also injured in the crash and were taken to hospital.

And the dislikes? I think News24 is messing with us..

  • Msika - 2012-04-27 08:17

'split in half'? A BMW? she must have been driving very, very fast (flying low). Condolences to the families.

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-04-27 11:36

It was split in 2 halves according to Minaar.

      Mavis - 2012-04-28 20:06

Tnx u r da only person to say dis, she's my sister, imagen wht I had to go through to identify them

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-04-27 08:18

I agree with your sentiments, Emmerson, but as long as we see road "accidents" as being a function of fortune, we will never make any progress in road safety. Everything that happens on our roads is a function of human input, and the only way to promote road safety is to increase human competence.

  • thabo.manganye - 2012-04-27 08:32

maxmum speed limit 120km/h and we think the people who regulated that law are fools. we will die on the roads , so unfortunate for the innocent children we kill as for adult passangaers in the car, i dont feel anything for they do condon such act of madness

  • Raymond - 2012-04-27 08:38

wow dats nt gud bt ppl dnt listin wen dey r told nt 2 speed or drink n drive, wat a sad story 2 hear dis long weekend ma condelences 2 der families n frndz..

      Luvo - 2012-04-27 09:16

@Raymond - Aren't you a little bit old to engage in that insane Twitter language. Hell I hate that damn language so much!!

      comurray - 2012-04-28 10:07

Please use English and not this type of gibberish. If you can't then don't comment. Idiot.

  • Luvo - 2012-04-27 08:41

Just an observation I've been having, most women cannot apply the basic driving skills and it makes my blood boil when they indulge in high speeds. I know on such woman who has a penachant for high speeds, one day she was driving down the freeway at high speed when her bonnet suddenly opened and she just closed her eyes and screamed her lungs out and it was miraculous that she managed to stop the vehicle without causing an accident.

      Emily-Jane Elson - 2012-04-27 08:59

      Let's not generalize..

      Deliwe - 2012-04-27 09:45

Luvo, I am a woman driver and this accident could have happened even if a man was driving. U know black men u suffer from pull her down syndrome. This is an accident which might have happened due to a lot of things so please stop pre-empting tht it happened bcos a woman was driving. How many huge accident happened bcos man were driving and innocent lives were lost. The message you could be sending is we should not drink and drive. Speed kills irrespective of u are a woman or a man. Stop bng a male shovinist by putting a gender tag where its not neccessary pls its just not neccessary.

      Belinda - 2012-04-27 10:10

are you on drugs dude? or just an ignorant peasant? i am a female and raced superbikes for 5 years. do you even know how to change a tyre. it is far too early in the morning to apply basic empathy for stupidity.

      PortiaTele - 2012-04-27 10:20

Luvo, if you saw the accident you wouldn't be making such comments. I passed there while they were moving their bodies. You need to go drive that route and then comment. Any drunk driver, whether male/female could have caused that kind of accident. The unfortunate part is, we will never find out what really happened. Stop blaming us for things going wrong on the roads. You shud start checking how some of your brothers are driving.

      llevitas - 2012-04-28 07:56

Agree with Emily-Jane and Belinda. Statistically it's been proven that women are better drivers than men. Really dumb and sexist comment Luvo.

  • Nico - 2012-04-27 08:42

For a car 2 break in 2 ... must have been at extremely high speed.....

      Stewart - 2012-04-27 09:09

      No just a BMW

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-27 09:05

People who didnt design a motor car should rather not drive as they have no idea how to use it and have no understanding about the dynamics of vehicle and road.I observe how people drive the worst ones are the non designers.

      Deliwe - 2012-04-27 09:50

Its either u dumb or highly bored. I have never heard of such utter nonsense. Who ever told u tht in this day in age only men design cars.

      abed26 - 2012-04-27 10:37

      You lunatic!

      kholofelo.monareng - 2012-04-27 11:59

@Mike: you poor thing!or rather pity to your girlfriend/wife.Your attitude tells me that you're a male chauvenist with no regard and respect for women.I am a woman - a very good and cautious driver.I happen to be in the Engineering field_huh,you must be shocked!Did you ever pause to think that maybe the lady was encouraged by the MEN in the car to step on it?no..As a matter of fact majority of vehicle accidents are caused by men because they think they're better. This is just a case of reckless, drunk driving-YOU could have been the driver-anybody could have been.

  • Elkita - 2012-04-27 09:26

BNlack and white is standing together now.Somebody does not like it

  • Vincent - 2012-04-27 09:47

Has anyone wondered whether the driver perhaps tried to avoid the pedestrians in the road, then lost control and had the accident?

      Belinda - 2012-04-27 10:03

exactly - people are quick to make comments - does anybody know what the actual cause of this tragedy was. car, speed, pedestrians, incompetence, design etc. My friend was disabled because a pedestrian decided crossed over the N2. He was the most cautious biker. He recently committed suicide. It is very sad what goes on out there. The worst part is how quick people are to judge. May these people rest in peace.

      Sello - 2012-04-27 12:54

If you swerved to avoid a pedestrian or an object and lost control, your car would not split in two halves, it would just crash into something and maybe not all occupants would die instantly. If a car is torn into two parts, it is VERY obvious that it was travelling at a terribly HIGH speed. Your defense of this people does not hold water! They were overspeeding finish and klaar and we should all condem this kind of behaviour especially since we lose thousands of people on our roads every year. We wouldn't have the JUB JUB case if people were not speed-crazy!

      Gungets - 2012-04-28 06:36

Split the car in half?. If they were doing a sane speed then avoiding things is a lot easier and safer.

  • Sello - 2012-04-27 09:49

I don't feel any pain for victims of self made tragedies anymore. What did they expect driving at a speed that could split the car in 2? I guess the four men were grinning and cheering the naïve lady on, well, they all got what they invited unto themselves! Sometimes death is just a perfect payment for deliberate foolishness.

      Mavis - 2012-04-28 20:01

U go to hell,u heartless thn, dats my sister u dnt even knw wht happened

      itumelengeunice.mpopo1 - 2012-04-28 21:13

  • Ricky Naidoo - 2012-04-27 10:12

It's sad the way they passed on (RIP) but that's fate and their destiny. None of us will ever know how we going to leave this world. No matter how hard one tries to avoid death it will come knocking on your door in one way or the other.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-27 10:30

Well said Sello they could have killed more innocent people.Vehicles are not toys.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-27 10:34

Most of you are making assumptions a vehicle is not designed to split in two at the speed limit unless the pole or tree was a cutting torch. Our roads and streets have become racing tracks, accident my arse.

      Sharon - 2012-04-28 11:23

read your comment over and over again before posting it -

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-27 10:38

I wonder what some of you do for a living and judging by your angry comments i hit the nail on the head.

  • Zighom - 2012-04-27 11:18

Cars arw not toys. I have a big bad and fast 7 series, but I'm happy to cruise at 120 unless for the odd overtaking. These things can kill. To think a woman was driving so fast in probably a 1 or 3 series which is cramped inside, is scary sht

  • Zighom - 2012-04-27 11:19

  • Grace - 2012-04-27 11:34

@LUVO - one question! If women were such bad drivers... Why are our insurance premiums cheaper than mens? Surely if we were such a 'high risk' on the road we'd pay more. That was a STUPID comment on your part with zero justification. Of ALL the terrible accident reports on the news... What percentage are women drivers, hmmmm?

      Zighom - 2012-04-27 13:39

I think womens premiums are bcos they're scared to drive fast, but u have a few who wana be men as u can see from this fallen one

  • Hendrick - 2012-04-27 14:05

I feel sory 4de victims of dat horrable accident, only if she knew what is coming on her way, accident remain accident no matter how it happens, we just have to learn not to repeat de mistakes of de past.

  • Abdul - 2012-04-28 11:04

Loss of lives on the road has become part of our daily lives. We just seem so oblivious to the carnage.....Driving attitudes must change!!!there must be serious consequence for disobeying traffic rules....See the website wwwfatalmovesdotcom

  • Mavis - 2012-04-28 20:11

Minaar,I'd hate to tell u dat dats my sister, and if u knew wht we had to go through to identify da bodies,if only ppl could ask thmslvs wht happened?I'm so hurt by other comments,as ppl we dnt knw hw we goin to die,we r lost as a family bcz she was da bread winner,#cryin#
