Johannesburg – Five people on the West Rand in Gauteng were
killed after a suspected drag race went wrong on Tuesday.
An elderly pedestrian died on the scene, while four others
in a bakkie were killed, EWN reported.
The cars were racing one another through Kagiso, when one of
the cars hit a pedestrian.
The driver of the second car reportedly fled the scene.
Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Ashref
Ismail said most accidents were caused by reckless driving, dangerous overtaking,
speeding and drunk driving, IOL reported.
The death toll of accidents in and around South Africa over
the festive season reached a staggering 1 200 on Monday evening, with
expectations of it being the highest in 5 years.
Many motorists are expected
on the roads on Wednesday when holidaymakers return home.
The death toll for the entire holiday in 2011 season was
1078.
