Durban - Five alleged robbers were killed in a dramatic shootout with members of the Hawks on the N2 near Port Shepstone late on Monday night.

Their bullet-riddled vehicle came to a standstill on the side of the freeway near the Oribi Plaza, with the bodies of five men slumped over inside.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said that detectives had been acting on information about the "dangerous group of armed robbers" who had been travelling in a vehicle from the Eastern Cape towards Durban.

"The driver of the vehicle ignored warnings to stop (and), instead, the occupants allegedly opened fire on the members resulting in a shootout and a high speed chase," he said.

"Shortly after, the suspects' vehicle came to a standstill and all the five suspects were declared dead. The five suspects have been positively linked to two cases murder and robbery in Mpumalanga and Mariannhill."

"One assault rifle (AK47) and two unlicensed 9mm pistols, several cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash were confiscated," Mulaudzi added.
