5 held for armed robbery

Johannesburg - Five people have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery of a fast food outlet in Mitchell's Plain, Western Cape police said on Saturday.

"Two armed suspects entered the establishment on Saturday and demanded cash from the staff. The suspects then fled the scene on foot with a cash register, police spotted them getting into a green VW minibus," said spokesperson Andre Traut.

Police pursued the suspects and one of the suspects fired several shots at police members in Lentegeur, police then responded by firing at the suspects, Traut said.

The suspects were apprehended in White Hall Lane.

"A 9mm pistol was recovered as well as the stolen cash register. One suspect sustained a bullet wound to his upper body and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment." The suspects, aged between 23 and 31 are expected to appear in the Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court soon to face charges of armed robbery.
