Johannesburg - Five men have been arrested for allegedly shooting dead five people and wounding three others at a party in Mpumalanga township, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The men, aged between 22 and 27, were arrested on Tuesday night, police spokesperson Jay Naicker said.

Five men, aged between 20 and 28, were shot dead on Saturday night at a house in Sankontshe, between Pinetown and Pietermaritzburg.

"It is alleged that the deceased were wanted for a number of murder cases and armed robberies committed in the area.

"Two of the deceased were out on bail and were due to appear in court next month facing murder charges," Naicker said.

Three other people who were at the same house were wounded.

They were not part of the group that was wanted for murders in the area.

Four firearms were seized during the arrests.
