5 in court for racist attacks

Mafikeng - Five men accused of racist attacks appeared briefly in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court on Friday, North West police said.

Martinus Smith, aged 23, and Jonas Lubbe, aged 31, were released on bail of R1 000 each. The case against them was postponed until June 30, said Lieutenant General Lesetja Beetha.

They are accused of beating to death Oupa Bethuel Randa, aged 51, the principal of Sebako Primary School in Driefontein, and assaulting an off-duty policeman friend of his as they left a local tavern on Monday night.

Two youths and 28-year-old Christiaan van der Merwe appeared separately, for alleged possession of dangerous weapons, said Beetha. They were suspected of being behind racial attacks in Zeerust, he said.

The three were released on a warning.
