5 killed in North West crash

2012-03-19 17:49
Johannesburg - A weekend crash near Lichtenburg has claimed five lives, North West police said on Monday.

Two women and two children, who were twins, died when a bakkie collided with a car on the R503 around 9am on Sunday, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

A third woman, who was injured in the crash, died in hospital on Monday morning.

Ngubane said two men, one from each vehicle, survived the accident.

The Nissan 1400 bakkie, carrying six family members, and the Audi A3 sedan, with two occupants, collided head-on about 35km outside Mahikeng.

A police highway patrol pulled two people from the sedan before it caught fire. One of them, a woman, died on the scene.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

A case of culpable homicide, and reckless or negligent driving had been opened against both drivers, Ngubane said.
