Cape Town - Two people burnt to death and a boy suffered burn wounds to his hands in a shack fire in Browns Farm, Philippi, on Monday.

City of Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesperson Liezl Moodie said firefighters had responded to the blaze in the early hours of the morning in Bhobhoyi Street.

"One wood and iron structure was destroyed by the fire. Two adults - one male and one female - died as a result of fatal burn wounds," she said.

The minor was receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Also on Monday morning, 20 shacks were destroyed by a blaze in NY1, Gugulethu, leaving 50 people displaced.

No one was injured in the incident. “The cause of [both] fires are undetermined at this stage, pending the necessary investigations,” Moodie said.

Three people were killed in separate shack fires on Sunday, when homes caught alight in Nomzamo, Strand and Philippi.

Moodie said fire and rescue services had responded to the blaze in Benox Street, Nomzamo, at 04:15.

"One [man] died as a result of receiving fatal burn wounds. The fire damaged six wood and iron structures and one dwelling, leaving fifteen persons displaced," she confirmed.

Later that morning, emergency services responded to a shack fire in Philippi's Better Life informal settlement.

One man was killed and the gender of the second victim could not be confirmed.

The cause of the blazes have not yet been determined.
