50+ murders a day in 2002

Cape Town - Just less than 60 people were murdered each day, on average, in South Africa last year, according to the latest figures.
In a written reply to a parliamentary question, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula said 21 405 murders were committed between April 2001 and March 2002, the most-recent 12-month period for which figures are available.
He said the murder figures for the preceding two years were:
April 2000 to March 2001: 21 758; and
April 1999 to March 2000: 22,604.
