53 Reddersburg protesters due in court

2012-05-01 16:33

Bloemfontein - Fifty-three people will appear in the Reddersburg Magistrate's Court after a violent protest by residents of the nearby Matoporong township, Free State police said on Tuesday.

"They will appear tomorrow [Wednesday] on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property, arson and sabotage," Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said.

She said everything was calm in Reddersburg on Tuesday.

However, the N6 in Reddersburg remained closed to traffic because of stones in the road.

Contrary to earlier reports, only 53 people were arrested for the protests, she said.

Violent protest

On Monday the Reddersburg's municipal building was set alight and protesters also threw stones at the municipal building, library and a supermarket.

The protesters were angry about an unsatisfactory response to a memorandum handed to the Kopanong local municipality three weeks ago.

Hlubi said the protesters were calm late on Monday morning and in the early afternoon, but that renewed violence broke out when it appeared that talks with the municipality had failed.

However, the Democratic Alliance argued that whenever there were protests it was far too easy to "trot out the usual lack of service delivery problems" and have a protest.

"There are service delivery problems throughout the Free State, and Reddersburg is not the worst. This just appears to be too well orchestrated - Zastron last week and now Reddersburg," DA spokesperson on local government and housing, Peter Frewen, said.

"Surely, political interference cannot be ruled out."

He said it was time that the African National Congress elected councillors who understood their roles and who were accountable to the public that elect them and take responsibility for their actions.

"It is time that the ANC Deployment Committee stops placing comrades, friends and family in positions in municipalities but rather let the council put the right people in management positions in municipalities."

Another example of service prividing by the ANC comrades. I bet all the money is gone and the munispality is bancrupt too. This is what you get when making promises to the masses, and you dont keep them.

reddersburg, eh? red nou n volk met sulke mense. the protesters should brief Outa on how to end e-tolling. the state will not prosecute because they will 'lose' the docket anyway.

Don't worry they will vote for us again.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-05-01 17:36

Rather arrest those who do not deliver service.

  • Philip Buys - 2012-05-01 17:57

Freedom for all! Now you have nothing! But strangely you will continue voting for the one that cannot deliver. Idiotic behaviour.

      Lordwick - 2012-05-01 20:13

@ Phillip,You are 100% correct that they would still vote for them but to say it's idiotic behaviour is what makes you the top of them all.One disappointment from our party doesn't mean we will have to leave it but show them that we are disappointed and that would only be in the same way the old regime has taught the majority of south africans to express their dissatisfaction.

And tomorrow's headline "Reddersburg protesters released with a fine". This movie has played out so many times over the last few years. There seems to be no solution to violent, destructive protests and no meaningful consequences either

You get what you vote for, go and burn down Luthuli House with the bunch inside

Not even DA has got as good as ANC policies. The only challenge ANC has always been facing is the implementation of their plans and the people that holds the positions to make the promised delivery of services efficiently. So irrespective of how bad the people and owners of this forums like stupid Smile might call ANC,it would be voted again by the same people that are complaining than the one's who are trying to score the political points in situations like this!!! Some people are taking others for granted,do they (DA) think that they can convince the majority to vote for them after such a long haul fro the party that the majority of ther supportes are the denialists....A BIG NO....DA WOULD NEVER RULE THIS COUNTRY ESPECIALLY IN OUR LIFETIME.

      Lacrimose - 2012-05-01 20:32

You talk about policies and promises which according to Reddersburg community are not being met. I'm not saying DA is the answer, but surely by now, you have to start taking responsibility for your democratic right not to be lied to or misled. These are not gods, they are people you hire to run the country and your community according to your wishes. If they are not doing their job, fire the people who are failing.
