6 arrested for kidnapping foreigner

2011-07-12 10:37

Johannesburg - Two South Africans and four Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a Dutch consultant and holding him captive at a house in Olivedale, Johannesburg, the Hawks said on Tuesday.

Three of the arrests were made on Saturday and the other three on Monday night, said spokesperson McIntosh Polela.

He said a Dutch company sent the consultant to South Africa to look into an advertisement for a R42m scrap metal deal.

However, he was kidnapped shortly after arriving in the country, when he got in touch with the people who had placed the advert.

The suspects demanded a ransom of $50 000, but dropped the victim off at OR Tambo Airport after about $15 000 was paid.

The Hawks made their first arrests at the house where the consultant was held, said Polela.

He said three of the people arrested would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The others would appear on Thursday.

Gees, how stupid are these people. So they actually went back to the house where they kept the man captive?? crazy, stupid things

      numnut - 2011-07-12 11:56

If they think crime pays, then they are not very clever to start off with. haha

      Boodaleh - 2011-07-12 12:24

So they released the victim on a 60% discount...LOL

      lakhan7 - 2011-07-12 13:17

...this is a bad name for South Africa... on an international level. thank you Nigers . ( South Africans will gladdly support SA to sell weapons to your country for war to break out - if this is the quality of people we get from Nigeria )

      Eezy-E@24.com - 2011-07-13 08:07

I can't help but think all the nigerians I see around are up to no good! Bloody leeches, they're gonna make xenophobia rise again if this goes on. Earlier I read about some Zimbabwean raping his landlord's 6 yr old girl, ***phew***

  • symbiosis1981 - 2011-07-12 10:45

when will we stop believing internet scams, a woman in my area lost a lot of money frome this cell fone scam, even after we were made aware of it I dont know how many times, Ive known the 419 scam since high school. people come on, wake up.

      Made_In_SA - 2011-07-12 10:58

Like I said below, it takes Greed and or Stupidity to get scammed.. there is no other excuse!

      Idomeneo - 2011-07-12 12:04

I have two friends in the SAPS who were going to respond to one of these scams until I put them wise. The police spend years investigating these things and their own officers still fall for it. The Nigerians know that there will always be a plentiful supply of stupid and greedy people.

      Liberty - 2011-07-12 12:52

yeah you won $100 million in a lucky e-mail draw and you have to pay R5000 to collect you prize. Most of us get those e-mails every day

      R013 - 2011-07-12 13:44

The problem is that in Europe you can generally trust what's online, thats probably why the Dutch guy fell for it... if it has anything to do with Africa, stay far away from it!

      Tolerant - 2011-07-12 14:01

This sounds more than an add in a paper.

  • willieman - 2011-07-12 10:45

Send the whole lot to the gallows they are tarnishing SA

      Boodaleh - 2011-07-12 12:26

yes, we have our crime scum, we don't need more who think that SA is criminal heaven

      AfroMaleGp - 2011-07-13 09:09

I knew without reading the story that it was Nigerians. Ngen ya.Again.

  • BRAD24 - 2011-07-12 10:47

Where there is nigerians, there is trouble.THESE PEOPLE ARE BAD,SAPS WAKE THE FU*K UP.CWELE GET OFF YOUR FAT ASS AND DO SOMETHING.

      PunkBuster - 2011-07-12 11:59

Gotta love the nigerians though. Wherever there's a scam, there's a nigerian. If nothing, its entertaining to read about. Unless lives are lost ofcause.

      FedUp - 2011-07-12 12:57

Honestly Brad24, the article advises that 6 have been arrested by the SAPS (not by anyone else) and there is no such manager as Cwele in the police, there is Cele and he is probably a lot fitter than you.

      chi chi - 2011-07-12 13:00

some people must stop blaming Nigerians or even the south Africa citizen that is involve, the Dutch company sent the person to come and do a black business in Africa, they are very stupid,he come to south Africa to buy scrap metal deal.in a black market, why can the person find out if the company is registered with south Africa government? because they told him is cheap and they are working for a metal company and they knew that it was stolen from where they are working. How can someone send u email and told u he has money in security company and he don't want governments to know about it and you support him to move the money out of country, what d u call that person? we must stop calling people name for nothing sake, this Europeans think that black is very stupid

      FaxM8 Fax - 2011-07-12 14:41

Half the SAPS are on the nigerians payroll

      BOY30 - 2011-07-12 14:42

@Chi chi. But still, nigerians are criminals. When one mention the word nigeria anywhere in the world they smell trouble. I wonder nigerians are proud of themselves.

      Niekie - 2011-07-12 17:24

chi chi, the europeans think so because it is so!

      West Africa - 2011-07-12 19:58

You are certainly making an emotional and not so clever statement. Can you prove your statement(where there is nigerians, there is trouble). And why the insulting words to the SAP and their Boss. Please get rational.

  • Neil - 2011-07-12 10:51

Good Work SAPS.. People like Kolobe and Kongo that will fall for these scams. LMAO!

      Neil - 2011-07-12 10:56

      @Kolobe: Don't flatter yourself.

      Jezabbela - 2011-07-12 11:09

@Made_In_SA, considering what happened in the past, do they have a choice though? Twice shy perhaps???

      Ryanbrew - 2011-07-12 11:20

@Kolobe My Brother-in-law was a Financial adviser for many years. Twice he had a "black" person come in wanting to invest the millions of dollars they were about to inherit from some rich person in Togo or Nigeria... only to find out that they had their lifesavings wiped out trying to get the money to South Africa. The people who fall for the 419 scam are white, black, coloured, indian. Greed knows no colour!!!

      Wayne - 2011-07-12 11:41

@daaivark - Wow what a useless comment as always.

      Jan Jabroer - 2011-07-12 12:13

Kolobe and Kongo are probably the masters of some of these scams.

      jowza - 2011-07-12 12:45

      you really are a jabroer

      PunkBuster - 2011-07-12 13:50

      mphozania - 2011-07-12 12:10

Lida u being what u are(stupid). Scams happen everywhere.

      johncarlos.biza - 2011-07-12 12:17

Nigerian 419 scams are popular and well known world-over. I doubt the average Dutch citizen will judge SA based on this

  • Made_In_SA - 2011-07-12 10:53

It takes Greed and or stupidity to get scammed.. I wonder which one was the case here?

      DeonL - 2011-07-12 11:08

He was not as stupid as the criminals as they were caught. Rather a clever Dutcman and stupid criminals.

I believe the root cause of most of the crimes these days in SA is because of foreigners usually without valid ID's we are the porthole to all criminals in RSA. People are poor and getting poorer by the day in RSA.

  • FaxM8 Fax - 2011-07-12 11:56

Only thing we need to do is change Johanneburg's name to Lagos we have enough nigerians already

      Tonsil - 2011-07-12 14:00

@Chi Chi. Nigerians are the scum of the earth. Where there is crime there is Nigerian scum. We have enough criminals of our own.

      FaxM8 Fax - 2011-07-12 14:42

Not we , The anc they governing

      Jules - 2011-07-13 10:44

@ Chi Chi - are you Nigerian perhaps as you seem to be defending the nation as a whole. Unfortunately most Nigerians in South Africa cause our crime rate to rise at a high level and hence why they are despised here....... Yes people of all nationalities live all over the world but most do so legally - except here in SA where anyone can just arrive and rape our country and think it is ok - well its not and it is high time our government started sending all these "illegal" immigrants back home!

  • Dan - 2011-07-12 12:34

Why is it that Nigerians are always involved in drugs, smuggling, human trafficing, prostitution, etc. in South Africa? Our government should restrict these criminals from entering our country - they are here only for criminal activity.

      jowza - 2011-07-12 12:42

they also messed up our zol market

      chi chi - 2011-07-12 13:16

      mamakalami - 2011-07-12 15:47

chi chi - I think its time to stop justifying criminal activities. There's a lot of ways people can make ends meet - open an internet cafe, sell second hand clothes on Plein St, park cars....It doesn't have to get dirty.

  • Mart - 2011-07-12 13:10

thank goodness all criminals are as thick as two short planks....they are !

  • Papsak - 2011-07-12 13:34

    4 Nigerians.

  • Kishore Doodnath - 2011-07-12 15:20

This kind of "bait and ransom" attack is becoming too common in SA. Not long ago a Brazilian was lured here on a similar pretext. The cops involved should demand at least R50 000 bonsela to deter such activity.

mamakalami , am not justified or supporting this act but what am saying is that there many ways we have been scam, even in the governments.

  • chi chi - 2011-07-12 17:11

anyone who call nigerians are criminals must also call tender fraud a criminals act, am not saying is good but stop calling Nigerians names because in every country we must have one thing or the other, here in South Africa, u hear about RAPE, MURDER, SMASH AND BREAK, KILLING, TENDER FRAUD AND MANY MORE. let tell our self the truth. no country is innocent of anything ok

  • chi chi - 2011-07-12 17:14

when people are coming to south Africa, the first thing u will hear is dont go they will kill u, or they will Rape, when u read in the news a man of 60 years rape a girl of 6 mouths, what do u call that?

  • Eland Eland - 2011-07-12 20:47

All Nigerians are one way or another are involved in crime. This might be a generalization, but with these Nationals, this is the exceptional truth. In Nigeria, corruption is a way of life; this has been confirmed to me by more than 5 Nigerian nationals. Go to Hilbrow in JHB and Sunnyside in Pretoria, drugs, prostitution, extortions, all these dirty crimes, a Nigeria is involved. If we want to stop crime, let us deport all Nigerian out of SA, crime will drop by +/- 50%, test me.

  • Eland Eland - 2011-07-12 20:50

The BIG Eland is watching all these Nigerian nationals of crime.

  • Michele - 2011-07-13 09:20

I got an email saying you're a winner and to collect I have to contact a Mr."Very english surname" in the UK. So for the joke I called the telephone number supplied and Mr. Nigerian answered with his NIGGY accent "What a laugh" I asked him so where did a Nigerian get such an english surname. He got peed off and put the phone down. LOL Hopefully all the people out there realise that these emails and competitions you win is a scam as how can you win if you haven't even entered a competition or fall for stories that you inherited money from an unknown relative!!!
