Johannesburg - Two South Africans and four Nigerians have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a Dutch consultant and holding him captive at a house in Olivedale, Johannesburg, the Hawks said on Tuesday.
Three of the arrests were made on Saturday and the other three on Monday night, said spokesperson McIntosh Polela.
He said a Dutch company sent the consultant to South Africa to look into an advertisement for a R42m scrap metal deal.
However, he was kidnapped shortly after arriving in the country, when he got in touch with the people who had placed the advert.
The suspects demanded a ransom of $50 000, but dropped the victim off at OR Tambo Airport after about $15 000 was paid.
The Hawks made their first arrests at the house where the consultant was held, said Polela.
He said three of the people arrested would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The others would appear on Thursday.
