Johannesburg - Six men were arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a school in Victory Park, Johannesburg, police said on Thursday.

The men, aged between 26 and 38, were arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Katlehong and Klippoortjie on the East Rand for allegedly killing Derek Wood, 53, last month, police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.

Three of the men were arrested in Katlehong following a police tip-off.

The white VW Golf, which was used during the shooting, was found on the scene and seized, said Mogale.

The others were arrested at a house in Klippoortjie.

One of the men was found at the house, while the other two were arrested when they arrived at the house later.

"Upon searching the premises, two unlicensed firearms were recovered," said Mogale.

Woods was shot three times in his upper and lower body on 27 February, spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu said at the time.

"It is suspected that the man was followed from FNB bank in Randburg," she said.

Woods arrived at De La Salle Holy Cross College junior school at 13:50 to fetch his children.

"A white VW Golf GTI with tinted windows parked behind him," Mulamu said.

Two men got out of the car, opened the door on the passenger side of Wood's car and tried to grab a bag containing R40 000.

The robbers and Woods wrestled for the bag and he was shot.

The thieves fled the scene with the money. Woods was taken to Milpark Hospital.

Mulamu said police had reliable witnesses who could identify the robbers and their vehicle's registration number.

Pupils in the school did not witness the robbery as they were still in class.

The men would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
