Pietermaritzburg - A Sunday picnic ended tragically when six people were killed in a head-on collision involving three cars near Albert Falls Dam on Sunday night.
Among the dead were the parents of two children - a girl and boy - who were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
In one of the other cars were a 21-year-old man, his girlfriend, his sister-in-law and her 3-month-old baby, all of whom were killed instantly. The family were returning to their home in Bombay Road after a picnic, said a relative who did not wish to be named.
Vehicle parts were scattered across the road in the pitch darkness, causing the traffic officials to close both lanes until the road had been cleared.
The distraught families stood crying among paper plates that had been flung out of one of the vehicles, remnants of what appeared to have been a happy day.
Loved ones of the victims remarked to one another that they could not fathom how the accident could have happened.
The accident occurred about an hour before rain started falling in and around Pietermaritzburg.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed that a collision involving three cars had occurred and that six people had been killed.
Cases of culpable homicide and negligent driving are being opened as investigations continue.
