6 die in tragic end to family's day out

2012-03-12 10:44

Pietermaritzburg - A Sunday picnic ended tragically when six people were killed in a head-on collision involving three cars near Albert Falls Dam on Sunday night.

Among the dead were the parents of two children - a girl and boy - who were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

In one of the other cars were a 21-year-old man, his girlfriend, his sister-in-law and her 3-month-old baby, all of whom were killed instantly. The family were returning to their home in Bombay Road after a picnic, said a relative who did not wish to be named.

Vehicle parts were scattered across the road in the pitch darkness, causing the traffic officials to close both lanes until the road had been cleared.

The distraught families stood crying among paper plates that had been flung out of one of the vehicles, remnants of what appeared to have been a happy day.

Loved ones of the victims remarked to one another that they could not fathom how the accident could have happened.

The accident occurred about an hour before rain started falling in and around Pietermaritzburg.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed that a collision involving three cars had occurred and that six people had been killed.

Cases of culpable homicide and negligent driving are being opened as investigations continue.

The little baby's death is the worst part of this story. Was a proper baby chair in use?

      Michelle - 2012-03-12 14:11

Milo, if you look at the pictures in Daily News report, I doubt a babychair would have helped. The vehicle is mangled - such a tragic end to a family day.

Hi Milo. Hope u are well. Da mum and baby in da accident was my sister and her baby. My sister was a mid-wife by profession. She was a dedicated nurse and mother. She would have done anythng to protect her kids. My sister's body lay on the road with her hand stretched out as if she was reaching for a baby but if you looked at the pic of the vehicles der was no way dey could have survived esp since the bmw split in two.

Divers licenses are too easy to pass, this carnage will continue as long as driving standards remain low & traffic officers only exist to trap speeders, In my area we have maybe 3 traffic officers, the only time I see them is when they are trapping in a 60 K zone that should actually be a 90 k zone, other than that I never see them.

      Tebbyscrat - 2012-03-12 16:38

Well said Nigel. Too bad there were few survivors for the traffic police to bribe this time. Yes I also agree that driving licenses are way too easy to buy let alone pass. When will all the corruption stop.

The most traggic part of the story is that the lady baby was the wife and child of the 1st responding paramedic. God only knows how he will deal and cope with this tragedy.so sad :(

The precious life of an innocent 3 month old baby lost due to apparent reasons of culpable homicide and negligent driving...and investigations are still opened...it is so scary as to how innocent lives are being taken away these days. It is appalling as to how the life of this baby was snatched away! My condolences to the grieving families. I suppose we can all just sit and wait endless hours for justice to prevail like we always have. My heart goes out to those involved in this terribly sad and horrible incident.

Hi Deevasha. I know it is over a year later that I'm commentin on ur msg. 1stly on behalf of the mother and baby's family, I would like 2 say thank u 4 ur words. Unfortunately cos my sister was married we have no idea as 2 wat had happened to the investigations. We nt even sure if da case is officially closed. No1 can get charged 4 reckless drivin as da drivers in both vehicles died in the accident. So a mother's hurt stil hurts and yearns 4 answers as 2 wat happened on the day she lost her youngest daughter. Enough about that. I would like 2 thank u 4 taking tym out of ur life 2 feel 4 a family that has lost loved ones. God bless

A year has passed since this tragic accident where we lost a part of our family. I hope that everyone out there learns from this tragedy. Life is too fragile and precious. Don't play with life whether its ur own or sum1 elses. When u use the road be courteous and consider other road uses. To the public in general I wanna say. When a family experiences a loss be there to support them. Don't go around speading lies and compounding untruths. Do not add to family grief by taking stories back to the families. If sum1 feels that they can replace loved ones wit sum1 else or wealth, let it be cos at da end of da day blood ties wil nver cut nor wil a blood tie be replaced. Be you say or do sumthng thnk about how u'd feel in the grieving family's situation. Whoever does wat leave dem cos der is a law of karma. What u sow, so shall u reap.
