6 horses die in suspected arson attack

2012-08-27 10:22

Johannesburg - Six horses burnt to death in their stables in Muldersdrift on the West Rand over the weekend, in what is thought to be a revenge attack connected to a labour dispute, Beeld reported on Monday.

Willie and Petro Basson kept eight horses on their property and were alerted to a blaze at the stables in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Willie Basson went to investigate, and found the burnt carcasses of his prized stallions Spirit and Sea Biscuit, and mares Rainbow, Fasset, Soekie, and her foal Grace.

Only two horses had managed to break out of their stables and these both survived the blaze.

"Our stable hand told me this morning that it looks as though somebody set the fire on both sides of the stable, to prevent the horses from escaping," a shocked Basson told reporters.

He said he was devastated, as his horses had been like members of his own family.

Five of the Basson family's seven workers left the plot in recent months after a labour dispute, it was reported.

Muldersdrift police are investigating the case, and Boykie Snyman, an investigator for the fire brigade, said a report about the cause of the fire would be released later this week.

Anyone that would do that to an animal deserves a slow and painful death.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The horse murders scandal refers to cases of insurance fraud in the United States in which expensive horses, many of them show jumpers, were insured against death, accident, or disease, and then killed to collect the insurance money. It is not known how many horses were killed in this manner between the mid 1970s and the mid-1990s, when a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation brought the horse killings to light, but the number is thought to be well over 50, and may have been as high as 100.[1] In addition, in 1977, the heiress Helen Brach disappeared and was presumed by law enforcement agents to have been murdered by the perpetrators of these crimes, because she threatened to report their criminal activity to authorities; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_murders No muthi in my hands just information and this happened outside Africa. No labour disputes
