Pietermaritzburg - Six people, including a home affairs official, were seriously injured when a marquee collapsed at the funeral of seven schoolchildren, the home affairs department said on Saturday.

Departmental spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the incident happened at a service in Bulwer, Northern Kwazulu-Natal, for the children who died on Monday while being transported to school in a bakkie

"After the funeral service, when the majority had left, the marquee collapsed," he said, adding senior home affairs official Bushy Sekhu was among the injured.

"Sekhu was taken to a local clinic, and Pietermaritzburg hospital before being airlifted to Durban hospital to undergo treatment."

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma attended the funeral as Bulwer is her parliamentary constituency.

The children were killed on Monday when their bakkie overturned on the R617 between Bulwer and Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

7 Dead. But this was death (manslaughter) by proxy, and they were not shot... How many children does this now make since Marikana? How many more than 34? But these roaming vacuum heads that are led, either by a pimple squeezer or a KFC champion (take your pick), declare a so-called public holiday on Monday to demonstrate in the Western Cape, instead of being concerned that their own younger brothers and sisters are being decimated. When will we see them do things that a Youth League should do, like voluntary community service, instead of meddling in things which should be left to those that are mature in knowledge and disposition.... Or are the children also to be considered as cannon fodder as well............
