Pietermaritzburg - Six people, including a home affairs official, were seriously injured when a marquee collapsed at the funeral of seven schoolchildren, the home affairs department said on Saturday.

Departmental spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the incident happened at a service in Bulwer, Northern Kwazulu-Natal, for the children who died on Monday while being transported to school in a bakkie

"After the funeral service, when the majority had left, the marquee collapsed," he said, adding senior home affairs official Bushy Sekhu was among the injured.

"Sekhu was taken to a local clinic, and Pietermaritzburg hospital before being airlifted to Durban hospital to undergo treatment."

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma attended the funeral as Bulwer is her parliamentary constituency.

The children were killed on Monday when their bakkie overturned on the R617 between Bulwer and Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.
