Cape Town - Six people died and eight were injured in two car accidents in the Southern Cape on Monday, Western Cape police said.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said four people died when a car collided head-on with an ambulance on the N12 at 01:15.

The car was overtaking another vehicle while on its way from Oudtshoorn to Dysselsdorp, he said.

The three men and woman in the car died. Three men and a woman in the ambulance were taken to the Oudtshoorn hospital with minor injuries.

Two men died in a separate accident on the N2 between George and the George Airport, said Pojie.

He said the driver of a Fiat Uno lost control of the vehicle which swerved across the centre median and hit the rear tyre of a truck.

"The Uno then collided with the side of a car travelling in the opposite direction towards Mossel Bay."

Pojie said two men and two women were injured and were taken to the George hospital.
