Cape Town – Six men from an Overberg fishing village were set to appear in court on Wednesday for illegal possession of crayfish and abalone, Western Cape police said.

The K9 unit received a tip-off on Monday that a vehicle was transporting the goods to Cape Town, said Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut.

They pulled over a Ford Cortina in Gordon’s Bay and found 57 fully sized crayfish, 47 undersized crayfish, 2 013 crayfish tails and 10 shucked abalone.

Traut said the goods, founds in a fridge at the back of the vehicle, had an estimated street value of R61 500.

They arrested the five men, aged 21 to 30, and seized the vehicle.

While pursuing the vehicle, the flying squad were also informed of a suspicious silver Volvo sedan on the N2.

The squad pulled the Volvo off at Baden Powell Drive in Macassar.

Thirteen bags of abalone, with an estimated street value of R105 500, were seized along with the vehicle.

Another man was also arrested.

All were set to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court.
