6 people, 2 goats killed in crash

2012-04-16 10:12

Johannesburg - Six people, including a 5-year-old child, were killed and five were seriously injured when their minibus taxi rolled on the N1 near Nasrec on Monday morning, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"The taxi rolled and four patients were found about 17 metres away from where the taxi was," said spokesperson Synock Matobako.

One of the injured said the passengers in the taxi were sangomas on their way to a ritual in Zandspruit. Matobako said two goats and a chicken were also inside the taxi. The goats were killed in the accident.

"We are appealing to motorists... we are seeing people dying in numbers. It didn't hit a car, it didn't hit anything, it just rolled."

Metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said traffic was heavily affected in the area and one lane had been closed off.

The driver has been charged with culpable homicide.

taxi again, when is gov going to regulate this industry

      Clifford - 2012-04-16 10:24

      Poor goats...

      rynhardt.ferreira - 2012-04-16 10:25

Now they are taking animal lives with them as well... Mmmmm, funny the sangomas couldn't prevent this :)The Government will never acknowledge that taxis are a threat on the roads. They do not care about it!!

      kayley.segal - 2012-04-16 10:46

6 Sangomas? They should have seen it coming...

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 11:04

@procold2, how would regulating the industry could have helped to avoid this accident?

      Erich - 2012-04-16 11:05

According to radio news a rooster was also killed. This is a medical disaster and I think the SANDF's medical squad should be called in to assist with the vacuum created by the untimely departure of the sangomas.

      Kala - 2012-04-16 11:06

You don't need to be a Sangoma to know that traveling in a mini bus taxi is dangerous to your health.

      Jaja - 2012-04-16 11:12

      CHISA NYAMA!

      Jaja - 2012-04-16 11:18

Condolences to the family of the dead.

  • molabakatleho - 2012-04-16 10:26

goats in the taxi, what on earth were goats doing in a taxi. aren`t animals supposed to be in a van or something

      Farmworker - 2012-04-16 10:44

No Mr Molaba as long as they have all the legal documents to move goats around, they can use a taxi to transport them because a taxi driver knows about it and they have hired it. If you have a taxi or whatever form of transport would you hire a van to transport your goat, I don't think so.

      Foc - 2012-04-16 10:48

I can just see people going on holiday with their pets travelling separately in a 'van or something'. I don't think there is a law preventing animals in a car or any specific vehicle. If you brave enough you can take your cow in your car ... and I DO NOT MEAN your wife!! :-)

      Marion - 2012-04-16 11:06

@farmworker - I'm sure you are correct, but is it also permitted to carry 11 passengers in the same vehicle as the livestock?

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 11:47

@Marion, I would assume the goats had their own seats and probably buckled up, as the mini bus is a 14 seater:) So, it aint a problem.

      Phillip - 2012-04-16 13:05

      the goat was driving...

  • Farmworker - 2012-04-16 10:37

I thought powerful Sangomas are able to foresee and clear dangerous obstacles which could cause accident on their journey. I guess they are not that powerful after all unless they are still practicing.

  • smapedi - 2012-04-16 10:52

Hectic indeed!! I would like to hear SPCA's comment on this...animal Cruelty!

  • Rob - 2012-04-16 10:54

The Sangomas never predicted this ?

      Aziz - 2012-04-16 11:14

hey rob...ur a star man....i think these sangomas were on some brew that morning instead of a good cuppa joe

  • Marion - 2012-04-16 10:58

I wonder how much they had to pay for the goats and the chicken.

      Farmworker - 2012-04-16 11:25

What makes you wonder Marion? If you thinking in terms of fare then I can tell you that they paid zero cent for the goat and chicken because they most likely hired a taxi to a function or gathering. And if you thinking it terms of the amount to buy a goat, then I can also tell you the price is was slightly higher because usually is not just any goat, but a goat with specific colors and in most case hard to find as well

      Derek - 2012-04-16 11:37

I think they might have played chicken.....

      Marion - 2012-04-16 12:18

      @Farmworker - I meant taxi fare.

  • winston.mullany - 2012-04-16 10:59

    Shame, poor goats!

  • Aziz - 2012-04-16 11:15

we are so concerned about the goats, what happened to the poor chicken?

      Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2012-04-16 11:21

It was found on the other side of the road...

      Marion - 2012-04-16 11:24

      @Gcwabe - very clever.

      leigh.windvogel - 2012-04-16 16:22

      The chicken crossed the road

  • Den - 2012-04-16 11:16

sounds like the goat was driving

  • Jack - 2012-04-16 11:16

The goats probably met a more peaceful end having a car accident than getting sacrificed for some ridiculous archaic ancestor worship!

      Vengence - 2012-04-16 11:23

Maybe they just wanted some goats milk for their breakfast?

  • Elkieta - 2012-04-16 11:16

I feel sorry about the goats

  • Elkieta - 2012-04-16 11:20

    Aziz.You're good.hahahahaha

  • Marion - 2012-04-16 11:25

I have been so amused and bemused by the goats and chicken that I totally overlooked the fact that six people died in this crash, including a five-year-old child. May they RIP and sincere condolences to their families and friends.

  • Sam - 2012-04-16 11:29

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 11:52

      LOL, that's classic

  • Maria - 2012-04-16 11:52

Could only happen in Africa....... Sangomas, goats, and taxis.!!!

  • Frans - 2012-04-16 11:54

Why is there no mention of the cow in this report?

  • Marcelle Riddin - 2012-04-16 12:07

how insensitive have South Africans become when they overlook that human lives were lost here.... not very proud of my ppl when it comes to that....

  • Manu - 2012-04-16 12:29

Ok this article is a good example of how not to report a road accident. It's a tragedy, but it reads like a comedy. One, the headline. "6 people and 2 two goats killed in crash". When did the death of goats become newsworthy? And they forgot the chicken? Two, it's reported that 'patients' were found 17 meters away from the taxi! Ok clearly the spokesman mispoke. But what is the point of quoting the spokesman when you know that he has mispoken? Three, "... it didn't hit anything, it just rolled". It just rolled? Why not say that the driver lost control of the vehicle? You don't have quote the spokesman word for word.

      Phillip - 2012-04-16 13:11

Manu...i think the reporter interviewed the chicken, that was still suffering from shock...

      Anele - 2012-04-16 14:19

@Manu the driver was stil in control of his taxi but it just roll. Its clear that the reporter took this as joke of the day, although it involves lost lives.

  • raegan.mcreed - 2012-04-16 12:31

the goats and chickens could of been sexual partners of the sangomas, with many cultures and beliefs in S.A anything is possible, the DAILY SUN newspaper usually proves these hardcore facts, may they all R.I.P....

      John - 2012-04-16 12:36

You should never "play" with your food.....

  • John - 2012-04-16 12:31

@siyadosiba, if you cant work out regulating the industry will help prevent these accidents then i am afraid you are not very bright

  • nicog1 - 2012-04-16 12:44

and the sangomas didnt see this coming?

      brendon.lieberz - 2012-04-16 12:57

They did. They had a vision that traffic might be congested, so they left early...

  • Hennie - 2012-04-16 12:47

maybe the goats hit the sangoma driver with a horn and he lost control.

  • Nicholas - 2012-04-16 12:53

"it didn't hit anything, it just rolled ..." Must be a factory fault, they just roll without any reason ...

      Anele - 2012-04-16 14:09

100% sure it was a factory fault.

  • kevin.moreland2 - 2012-04-16 12:56
