Johannesburg - Six people, including two children, survived after their boat sank off Brighton Beach in Durban on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the boat skipper called the institute from his cellphone for assistance.

The skipper said the he and the other passengers were preparing to abandon the boat as it was fast filling up with water, said Lambinon.

"The skipper then confirmed to us that the boat had capsized and all six people onboard were now hanging onto the upturned hull of the boat," said Lambinon.

"On our arrival on scene a search commenced...and we found all six people drifting [in the water] in their life-jackets".

Lambinon said the hull had drifted away from the group, leaving them floating around without anything to hold on to.

The group were treated for mild hypothermia and shock but were otherwise unharmed, he said.

The group had been on a fishing trip.
