East London - A 6-year-old girl was raped, allegedly by an older pupil at a private school in King William's Town in the Eastern Cape, it was reported on Friday.

The Daily Dispatch reported that the girl was raped at a school toilet last week Friday.

According to the report, the pupil accused of raping the girl was still attending school even after the matter had been reported to the school principal.

The family said it had been "disgusted and disappointed" by the manner in which the school had handled the alleged rape.

"The school had failed us because they showed no remorse and at first the headmaster denied that the incident even occurred," a family member was quoted as saying.

The case was reported to the police who were investigating the matter.
