60 fall ill at Johannesburg school
Johannesburg - At least 60 learners fell ill at a school in Mulbarton, south of Johannesburg, and were taken to hospital, paramedics said on Thursday.
Pupils were complaining of nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting on Wednesday, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.
The children were aged between 6 and 12.
According to an EWN report, the cause of illness was food poisoning. According to the report, which quoted Wicks, the children were taking part in a Milo roadshow at the school, Mulbarton Primary.
"Paramedics calmed and reassured the panicked children whilst facilitating their transport to hospital for further care and investigation," he said.
They were taken to various hospitals and were in a stable condition.
The father of one of the pupils was quoted as saying that when he was alerted to the incident, he rushed to the school.
“I found the kids scattered around on the playground when I entered… There were maybe three or four ambulances…” he said.
