2012-02-07 09:43

Johannesburg - A sixth man was arrested for killing an off-duty metro police officer in a shebeen in Soweto at the weekend, the Johannesburg metro police said on Tuesday.

"A man in his early 30s was arrested at a house in Bloemfontein in connection with the murder of a metro officer," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

He said the man was believed to have been the one who pulled the trigger.

"The arrest was made by the SA Police Service and JMPD [Johannesburg Metro Police Department] officers after receiving a tip-off.

"The suspect was caught while sleeping in one of the bedrooms at the house belonging to a relative."

He was being detained at the Protea police station.

Five people were arrested on Sunday and police were still searching for another man.

The officer was shot dead when he tried to stop a fight between the men at the shebeen.

They were apparently fighting over a woman.
