7 arrested for public violence in Free State

Bloemfontein – Seven people were arrested for public violence in Phomolong in Henneman during a protest on Friday morning, Free State police said.

About 1 000 residents said they were unhappy about an alleged meeting that failed to take place on Thursday, Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane told News24.

She said, according to residents, the meeting was to elect new candidates for the upcoming local elections.

"[The police] were also not aware of the meeting. Residents went as far as closing the R70 in Henneman on Thursday night, leaving school children stranded to go to school. No vehicle can come in or out of the area because main routes were closed with rocks and burning tyres. We have advised foreign nationals to close their shops today to avoid looting," she said.

Mokhuoane said police were using water tanks to control the crowd. No one was injured.
