Johannesburg - Seven awaiting trial prisoners shot and injured a warden during their escape from Mthatha prison, the correctional services department said on Monday.
They broke out during supper on Sunday afternoon, spokesperson Zama Feni said in a statement.
"With a firearm they had, they forced their way out of the centre and a correctional official was shot and injured."
The warden was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha.
The escapees were Sakhumzi Mvoko, Sibusiso Jejana and Odwa Sithole, all aged 27, from Mthatha, and imprisoned for robbery, car theft and escaping from custody.
Khaya Bulo, 39, from Zimbane in Mthatha was jailed for robbery, murder and escape from custody. Bongani Daluka, 33, from Mqanduli; Xolani Buthelezi, 32, from Durban and Yandisa Bila, 30, of Ngqeleni were all jailed for robbery.
Acting regional commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast said a team of officials and police was on the lookout for the escapees.
"We will conduct a thorough investigation to find out why this unfortunate incident took place, and why the firearm found its way into the hands of the offenders."
