Johannesburg - Seven awaiting trial prisoners shot and injured a warden during their escape from Mthatha prison, the correctional services department said on Monday.

They broke out during supper on Sunday afternoon, spokesperson Zama Feni said in a statement.

"With a firearm they had, they forced their way out of the centre and a correctional official was shot and injured."

The warden was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha.

The escapees were Sakhumzi Mvoko, Sibusiso Jejana and Odwa Sithole, all aged 27, from Mthatha, and imprisoned for robbery, car theft and escaping from custody.

Khaya Bulo, 39, from Zimbane in Mthatha was jailed for robbery, murder and escape from custody. Bongani Daluka, 33, from Mqanduli; Xolani Buthelezi, 32, from Durban and Yandisa Bila, 30, of Ngqeleni were all jailed for robbery.

Acting regional commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast said a team of officials and police was on the lookout for the escapees.

"We will conduct a thorough investigation to find out why this unfortunate incident took place, and why the firearm found its way into the hands of the offenders."

Acting Regional Commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast said a team of correctional officials and the police was on the lookout for the escapees. Will that before or after breakfast ?

Its harder to get inside , than get outside. Just shows you, committing crimes 'might' get you into the 'elite government college' known as 'prison' - but if you get out, you have failed to graduate !! They will be back.

"who this unfortunate incident took place and who the firearm found its way into the hands of the offenders," he said", Editing needed....? Is that not why the proposed article is checked by a revisor and an editor before going on paper or THIS page? @ Heunes, maybe try 'how' in place of the where?

Im a Correctional officer and Mr. Breakfast is my Acting Regional Commisioner. This is the best guy for the job as RC of eastern Cape with lots of experience in DCS, not like the other who are just politically apointed. And for sure he eat non performers in our region for Breakfast if they dont perform. in the few months he is acting he has rectify a lot more then the others did in years.

With an efficient police service this would not have happened. How many times do we read about prisioner escapes. This is just another indication of the poor quality of police in the service.

What more appropriate than to exercise MORE of the ANC National Sport second only to producing underage child grants on FREEDOM DAY? How many murderers do not escape from prisons here. The normal modus operandi, being that the prisoners offer trade to the wardens and guards of sex beyond their wildest dreams, sometimes flashing it between the bars - and THEN roll them over in more ways than was expected. Gets a bit different in the case of a backscratcher like Shabir & the Shaik's who is chained to a deathbed and no longer presented with a presidential back to scratch. Needs frigid rigid gupta dollar intervention at this stage, not a common sexed warden. in any event HAPPY RACIST DAY, Freedom Day to HATE MORE WHITES with loading more employment equity!

Let me say that the "United Forensic College" is the friendliest, most helpful and accessible college out there right now. The Criminal Justice curriculum isn’t going to overwhelm you.

These poor prisoners knew that they would not get a fair trail. What else could they do?
