7 due in court over gang rape of teen

2012-04-19 07:47

Johannesburg - Seven people - two of them minors - accused of gang raping a Soweto teenager are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The men and boys, who matched the descriptions of the rapists seen in a video recording of the attack, were arrested in Dobsonville on Tuesday.

The video of the rape of the 17-year-old girl went "viral" on the internet on Wednesday and was one of the main topics trending on the social networking site Twitter.

The girl went missing three weeks ago and was found in a man's house in Braamfischerville on Wednesday. This man was the eighth person arrested in connection with the crime.

AP reported that the girl apparently has the mental capacity of a 5-year-old.

Outrage

Meanwhile, public outrage over the rape has continued to mount.

The incident was outrageous and despicable, and should be condemned outright by society, the SA Council of Churches (SACC) said on Wednesday.

"We are angry and worried that this society continues to give birth to people who have no regard for the sacredness of human life as God’s gift," said its general secretary Rev Mautji Pataki.

"How else and what more should we say about these people in our society whose lifestyle is shaped by violence and brutality - people who trample upon others’ human dignity, rights and freedom to the extent of making mockery of our constitutional liberties?" asked Pataki.

The ANC Women's League said the issue once again raises questions about South Africans' attitudes toward rape and women.

"When does it become acceptable amongst a group of peers to rape a girl and laugh about it? It just makes one sick to the stomach," it said.

The league also commended the mother who saw the video clip of the rape on her child's cellphone and reported it to the authorities, urging parents to monitor what their children are doing on social networks.

I hope the court system does NOT fail us this time and I hope that the dockets and evidence don't mysteriously disappear again! The disgusting cretins MUST be punished to the full extent of the law and sit for a very long time where they can not hurt anybody else... (and may I just say that I hope THEY get hurt every hour of their lives while they are in there!)

      npretorius2 - 2012-04-19 07:58

      Pappa wag vir hulle!

      Felix - 2012-04-19 07:58

Bet they all plead not guilty despite the video evidence, cretins.

Dockets and evidence will only disappear if they are related to top ANC officials, then they will be transferred to hospital.

dont forget our "trustworthy" judiciary might drop the case because of "lack of evidence"

      Jack - 2012-04-19 10:08

and our President Mr. Zuma leads the way. What was that book he wrote again...oh yes. "Raping and preventative HIV measures"

  • npretorius2 - 2012-04-19 07:56

Would be nice if the comunity dealt with them before they could get caught, but I guess life in jail should be fine.

      Morne - 2012-04-19 21:53

They must get sentenced for surely, the guys is jail will show them what true love is for real... Sick bastards

  • Thoka - 2012-04-19 07:59

Saying goes it takes a community to raise a child, before a child can practice that dispicable things there were signs of misbehaviour and hanging with wrong people.

      Lacrimose - 2012-04-19 08:09

It also takes a village to raise an idiot

      Thoka - 2012-04-19 08:19

this not an act of idiocity but evil, its question of how do we deal with the devil inside. Necklace the devil

      Marion - 2012-04-19 08:24

@Lacrimose - and your point is? Thoka says that there were signs that the boys/men were on the wrong path before they got to this point and someone should have realized that. Do you believe that these were model citizens who one day just woke up and decided to rape somebody? Or do you only understand comments that are written in the Queen's perfect English?

      Thoka - 2012-04-19 08:25

Let me disagree. to be an idiot does not make you a criminal

      Rob - 2012-04-19 08:48

Many of these tsotsis are the product of the dysfunctional multi spouse, multi offspring way of life for those still clinging to ancient cultural rights that have no place in an economically driven modern day society. The fact that the countries president practices this way of life, does not assist in eradicating it & allowing this backward custom to be done away with. Pity the children who are often the innocent victims raised under these circumstances. No pity for THESE " children " though. Even the lowest form of scum, knows that what they did was disgraceful & disgusting. When will people learn that raising children is a huge responsibility !

  • dumisiledee - 2012-04-19 08:01

They must stop calling these flippen criminals minors they must be trialed and adults because what they did was inhumane. Bloody scumbags.

      dumisiledee - 2012-04-19 08:54

      AS adults.

  • Stephen - 2012-04-19 08:01

Keep something in mind here, we have a president who's been to court for rape, wonder what seed that has planted in our youth.

      zamom - 2012-04-19 09:11

Exactly when was the president caught for rape?

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-04-19 09:28

O come on!!! Yes, our president is not the best example, but it is us, as a society, that fail ourselves. Call them, Italy, France etc's presidents. Does it mean that they can now all do what their presidents h'v done or is it themselves, their communities/societies?

      txhalisa - 2012-04-19 11:04

Stephen this is not a racial case... Many people get raped and people like you think its a joke.

  • Sheralee - 2012-04-19 08:02

In these sort of cases, it's kind of hard not to want the death penalty.

  • Emily-Jane Elson - 2012-04-19 08:04

Doesn't matter what the age - if they capable of doing the crime they must do the time! They shouldn't be excused.. Fact they filmed it too means they know exactly what they did!! I hope they get it right this time and convict these guys and they don't away on a technicality..

  • Princess - 2012-04-19 08:14

Anybody know where the criminals are from ?

      lebogang.molefo - 2012-04-19 08:35

Dobsonville, Braamfischer and Snake Park in WestRand, JHB... I've lived in two of those areas

  • Susan - 2012-04-19 08:15

The sad reality is that in a lot of cases like this, the parents will sell their kids to people to use...they should also be locked away for good...

      txhalisa - 2012-04-19 11:08

We should remember that the mother is the one who reported the matter to the police. Why would parents sell their children?

  • Mashudu - 2012-04-19 08:18

No Jail please. They must rot in Jail, what they did is evil!

  • Dieter - 2012-04-19 08:24

    send them to Ellis Park

  • Dennis - 2012-04-19 08:28

Youth who raped - Die in jail after being raped yourselves !! Parents of youth who rape - You should be held accountable as well !! ANCWL - You are as useless as usual !! ANC - Is this the freedom you wanted ??

      Stille - 2012-04-19 09:12

I really hope your children are perfect and never makes any mistakes, because holding a parent responsible for a 17 yo kid's inbred behaviour is just stupid.

  • lebogang.molefo - 2012-04-19 08:38

Can't believe there are people who still ask around for the video.... They are as guilty as the rapists because they are robbing this girl of her dignity.... Hope the rapists rot in jail since the death penalty is not an option.....

  • Jana - 2012-04-19 08:39

Raping any girl is sick, but really! Gang raping a mentally disabled girl... I have no f***ing words!

  • Stlouis Heidtmann - 2012-04-19 08:41

kill them all death penalty must be brought back or people will start to take justice in to there own hands

      butch.poulter - 2012-04-19 08:50

Better than our current justice system. Worse than animals

  • George - 2012-04-19 08:54

So since this girl is mentally handicapped what's gonna happen, she is not going to be able to testify. Or is this gonna be one of those cases where everyone know that they are guilty, but they just walk free anyway.

  • Anton - 2012-04-19 08:55

They will prob get 5 years jail time max. Another case of a PATHETIC law system. The youth of today are raised in a society where no one gives a crap about any one else. Media portays that rape and stealing and killing is an accepted "norm", i mean, they see their own president getting away with rape and corruption, so why cant they. Im not a negative person, but if the leadership of our country doesnt have a drastic turn around, and we all know its never going to happen, this country is doomed. I thought at a stage that the youth cumming through now will be more educated and have greater respect for human kind, but with reports like these, it makes it very difficult to keep that hope alive. And yes parents should be held accountable, but is it really their fault ??? Out of all honesty, the post Mandela ( who i still regard as the best president we have had in my lifetime )government is to blame. If they had carried on with Mandela's vision and mission for our country, we would not be in the mess we are in right now. They litteraly force society to steal and kill just to survive. The example they set is clearly followed by miss guided south africans, miss guided because our government clearly doesnt give a rats @ss about this country, just themselves and their wallets. It does say in Revelation that the end times will be harsh, but to suffer due to people with a complete lack of humanity and common sense is ridiculous. Just my 2cents.

  • Ask - 2012-04-19 08:58

These rapists deserve street justice; NOTHING LESS; they should be necklaced... not negotiable... you want to live like an animal - you should die like one... you want do the crime... then be prepared for the consequences...

  • Lauden Kirk - 2012-04-19 09:01

This is a clear indication what our society has come to. Hell on earth. God only knows why. Rape gets you the right to presidency that has set the standard. Free will gets you in trouble with no godly force

  • Jeffrey - 2012-04-19 09:03

The safe place one said, rape to him is as safe as heaven. he was actually saying South Africa is the safe place to do all this kind of immoralities and corrpt acts. He will be in honeymoon soon,

  • Stille - 2012-04-19 09:04

    lol at 7 "people"

  • Crracker - 2012-04-19 09:08

What makes it even more sickening is that, according to what someone said over radio, the video shows that the rubbish offered/gave the victim R2 to keep quiet. This to a victim who apparently begged them not to rape her and so clearly said no. Apparently throughout the ordeal. The rubbish seem to have interpreted her protestations as consent as if she was not serious and could be bought for R2. That's what it seems like, and if it is so there is no hope whatsoever with the current crop of youth in this country. No laws, courts, so-called education will make a difference. It is a mentality that sits too deep to be eradicated. It's as if they regarded it all as OK. There should be no reason why any of them should be treated as minors. Their trial should be be finalized within two weeks. The evidence is there and no legalistic BS should be allowed. Place the evidence before court and sentence them. No wait. Maybe one should not be so condemnatory. Maybe it is part of their way of life and their perception of the world. How can one blame someone who has no inkling of the wrongfulness and vulgarity of their actions? Also unfair. Mmmm. Difficult one this.

  • Henry - 2012-04-19 09:09

No matter what other people mght say crime is something which has not been and we never be tolerated in this country (no anywhere else, I suppose) at no stage has rape (or gang rape) has been worth filming and circulated. I have confidence in the justice system of the country and strongly suggest that the law should be let to take it's course. My pity goes to the poor victim (and her parents)

  • mattjohnbass - 2012-04-19 09:19

filthy pigs... no pigs are not this bad. These beings are sub-human and deserve nothing more than the harshest sentences. It is cases like this that highlight why we need the death penalty...

  • King Leonard Nyiko - 2012-04-19 09:22

Parents must look after their children. some of the things that makes children to go astray from the accepted path is that parents do not spent time with their children. we can't always blame South Africa for our own responsibilities

  • Gregory - 2012-04-19 09:22

This is shocking. Not human behavior , makes me wonder where this country is going with the crimes like this occurring. Even our president has questionable sexual behavior.

  • AdeleFHM - 2012-04-19 09:31

Justice, have no mercy, may they get life and think about what they did and educate themselves behind bars!!

  • Timothy - 2012-04-19 09:31

Society is really evil how do we as humans let such things happen we do a lot talking change starts with all of us so let`s stop talking and do what`s right people and what`s going on, On earth is just pure evil.

  • Sethole - 2012-04-19 09:38

It takes the whole village to raise a child,so lets name and shame the rapists within our society

  • Jean - 2012-04-19 09:39

7 against 1?? like i said, the evidence we have is enough, dnt waste our time, the judge- we have other issues to handle, just bang on the table, 13yrs life imprisonment for each. and 7yrs life imprisonment, eish makes me cry :>

  • Rick - 2012-04-19 09:52

With such clear evidence against these 8 monsters I trust we will not once hear or read the words POSTPONE and BAIL and APPEAL. It is also time we rethink the RIGHTS granted to criminals where there is such blatant clear evidence of the heinous act that was committed.

  • Gavin - 2012-04-19 10:15

You know what really scares me about this whole mess, is that there are people who actually called in to various radio stations yesterday, wanting to know how they could get access to the video. If it were up to me, they could've been arrested as well. I believe that crimes like these are like drug addictions, as the adduction pregresses, you need a bigger and stronger fix to satisfy your appetite. If the future belongs to the youth - God help us all.

  • anthonyangiev - 2012-04-19 11:14

This is disgusting!! Every day there is a new story on News24 about yet another child being raped in SA. This is becoming the norm looks like - I really feel sorry for these poor kids. I just don't understand how there can be so many rapists or are they just not being locked up like they should be? The justice systems seems to disappoint us more often than not! Very Tragic.....

  • Leonie - 2012-04-20 13:41
