7 due in court over gang rape of teen
Johannesburg - Seven people - two of them minors - accused of gang raping a Soweto teenager are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The men and boys, who matched the descriptions of the rapists seen in a video recording of the attack, were arrested in Dobsonville on Tuesday.
The video of the rape of the 17-year-old girl went "viral" on the internet on Wednesday and was one of the main topics trending on the social networking site Twitter.
The girl went missing three weeks ago and was found in a man's house in Braamfischerville on Wednesday. This man was the eighth person arrested in connection with the crime.
AP reported that the girl apparently has the mental capacity of a 5-year-old.
Meanwhile, public outrage over the rape has continued to mount.
The incident was outrageous and despicable, and should be condemned outright by society, the SA Council of Churches (SACC) said on Wednesday.
"We are angry and worried that this society continues to give birth to people who have no regard for the sacredness of human life as God’s gift," said its general secretary Rev Mautji Pataki.
"How else and what more should we say about these people in our society whose lifestyle is shaped by violence and brutality - people who trample upon others’ human dignity, rights and freedom to the extent of making mockery of our constitutional liberties?" asked Pataki.
The ANC Women's League said the issue once again raises questions about South Africans' attitudes toward rape and women.
"When does it become acceptable amongst a group of peers to rape a girl and laugh about it? It just makes one sick to the stomach," it said.
The league also commended the mother who saw the video clip of the rape on her child's cellphone and reported it to the authorities, urging parents to monitor what their children are doing on social networks.
