Johannesburg - Seven men were arrested at the weekend for allegedly robbing a couple and raping the woman in Makwassie, near Wolmaransstad, North West police said on Monday.

A group of seven men, armed with knives, accosted the 27-year-old woman and her boyfriend shortly after they left a tavern on Saturday morning, said police spokesperson Amanda Funani.

The men, aged between 18 and 21, took their cellphones.

"They allegedly took the lady and left the boyfriend behind, who ran to police station," said Funani. She claimed that the men raped the woman.

Police arrived and arrested the men, who would appear in the Makwassie Magistrates' Court on Tuesday on charges of armed robbery and rape.
