Johannesburg - Seven people were killed and one person was seriously injured in two accidents west of Johannesburg this weekend, paramedics said on Sunday.

Six people were killed when two cars collided head-on along Koster Road in Magaliesburg, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Five people died on impact when a Toyota and a BMW collided at around 23:30 on Saturday. One man sustained critical injuries and went into cardiac arrest, Botha said.

"Paramedics worked fervently for about 45 minutes to try and resuscitate the patient - tragically he died on scene due to the extensive injuries that he sustained."

In another accident, one man died and another was seriously injured when a bakkie and a car collided at the R550 and the N14 intersection near Krugersdorp, Botha said.

The critically injured man was stabilised on scene and taken to hospital.

That accident took place at about 22:20 on Saturday.

Both accidents would be investigated by police.
