Johannesburg – A 7-year-old boy has drowned in a dam at a farm in Randfontein, on the West Rand, paramedics said on Thursday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the boy was last been seen on Wednesday afternoon.

"Police and other authorities searched for the boy on the farm for hours. Police divers were then called in to help look for the boy at the farm's dam. Sadly, his body was retrieved at 01:20 this morning."

Mathe advised parents and child minders to be "extra vigilant of children if there are water sources nearby".
