70 drowning cases reported
Cape Town - At least 70 drowning incidents were reported to ER24's national contact centre over the holidays, the emergency services company said on Monday.
Drownings spiked at the beginning of December with at least 20 cases reported in the first week, a statement read.
"Over 50 of these drowning incidents were fatal."
The ER24 Surf Rescue Medicopter attended to over 26 call outs along the Cape coastlines to help people that were either swept out to sea or injured themselves offshore. The majority of the cases involved children under the age of 16. They also attended to two diving accidents where two men were seriously injured.
"ER24 urges the public to take special care when they are in or near water," the company concluded.
