Johannesburg - Seventy people were left homeless when a fire broke out at an informal settlement in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg on Tuesday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Spokesperson Percy Morokane said 35 shacks burnt down when the fire broke out at around 01:00.

Preliminary reports indicated that one shack caught fire when a two plate stove was left unattended, and the fire spread to other shacks.

"Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire after 04:00," he said.

No injuries were reported.

"The disaster management of the city is assessing the situation and offering help to all affected people."

Sjame poor people, probably using the two plate stove, that was made in china, to keep the shack warm during this icy spell.

"A two plate stove was left unattended", but why Tragic, at least no one was injured.

I've seen with my own two eyes how people use these two plate stoves as heaters for when they're cold.

Yeah when people are cold they tend to seek a source of heat for survival >_>

Squatter camps are a very bad thing, its a fire, health and flood hazard. It breeds filth, disease, and crime. I can not understand that the ANC government can not provide proper housing with clean running water, electricity and proper roads, after all during the elections that is what was promised to the squatters. I am sure a third of these squatter camps could be eradicated with all the billions wasted on the arms deal, and many other shady deals where taxpayers money is being wasted and not accounted for. The ANC Government surely things absolutely nothing of its people if they can continue to allow their people to live in such horrifying conditions. Are they only as good as their votes and after that its to hell with them.
