Johannesburg - Eight people were arrested on Thursday afternoon after a mob killed a youth suspected of house robbery in Protea Glen, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

On Wednesday, a man reported a case of theft and housebreaking to the police and told them he suspected an 18-year-old who lived in the area, police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said.

"Later in the evening he went to the boy's house and took him back to his house. The boy was allegedly assaulted by the community."

The teenager was declared dead on arrival at hospital and the police opened a case of murder.

Eight people, including the man whose house was burgled, were arrested and were expected to appear soon in the Protea Magistrate's Court.

Makhubele said more arrests were expected.
