8 in hospital after Randburg gas leak

2012-04-13 14:35

Johannesburg - Eight people were taken to hospital after a gas leak at a Randburg building on Friday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

They complained of eye, stomach and throat irritations, said spokesperson Synock Matoboko.

He said over 800 people were evacuated from the JDG Trading Financial Services building on Kent Street.

Emergency personnel and other authorities used breathing masks when entering the building.

"It [the building] has been declared unsafe at this point. We have not yet verified what was leaking but we suspect that it was air-conditioning gas," said Matoboko.

"Technicians are checking on it right now and trying to seal the portion where the leak is."

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said five of the eight people were in a serious condition and showed symptoms of respiratory distress.

"The gas is believed to have circulated through the building in the ventilation system," he said.

If it was the refridgerant it would obviously be circulated through the air conditioning ducts. Here's hoping all those in hospital get well soon.
