Bloemfontein - Eight people, including five children, were killed in an accident on the road between Rouxville and Smithfield in Free State, police said on Monday.

Free State police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said the accident, in which a vehicle crashed into a family pushing their vehicle off the road, happened at 01:50 on Monday about 10km from Rouxville.

She said it was alleged that a family of nine, four adults and five children were driving in an Opel Kadett from Barkley East on their way to visit relatives at Virginia.

Their vehicle experienced a mechanical fault and it came to a complete halt in the road just outside Rouxville.

Police said a man and a woman with all five children stepped out of the car in an attempt to push it off the road.

Another vehicle with two passengers allegedly crashed into the group of people trying to push the Opel out of the road.

"Two adults, a 45-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, with five children, four boys aged one, 6, 10, 11 and an 8-year-old daughter died instantly."

Mbambo said the 38-year-old driver of the vehicle that crashed into the group also died at the scene after his vehicle caught fire on impact.

The other passengers in the vehicles survived the accident.

Mbambo said a case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation.

The names of the deceased were not released as their next of kin have not been informed.

    Nine people in a car that is only legally allowed to transport 5 people - when will people learn??? Condolences nonetheless.

      yes, everyone can afford something bigger

      1gascan - 2011-04-26 07:58

      @brianR - I didn't mean it like that... Stop being so narrow-minded!

      brianR - 2011-04-26 08:28

      Kids of a certain age, do not count as adults, but as halves, so in effect it can be that the car was not overloaded... and that is according to the RTA further to that, what do you do if that is the transport you can afford and you have that amount to transport? but yes, then the debate will be if you can afford to have that many kids... see, two sides to a story and not so narrow minded

      Ok brianR, lets do some maths then: 9 people, of which 4 are adults - that leaves 5 children. 5/2 = 2.5 adults. Therefore (according to the RTA and your logic) there were 6.5 adults in the vehicle - it is still overloaded! I understand what you are saying in terms of the transport that one can afford, but get someone to help, or make 2 trips. No matter the cost of fuel etc, it is not worth a single life on the roads - rather safe than sorry!

      under s certain age counts less than half too, and the one adult killed was the driver of the other vehicle?
