Johannesburg - Eight people were killed and about six were seriously injured in an accident on the N1 near Ladismith on Saturday morning, Western Cape police said.

"A taxi and truck were involved in a head-on collision on Saturday morning on the N1 outside Ladismith heading towards Beaufort West," said police spokesperson Colonel Billy Jones.

He did not know what caused the accident but said the police are investigating the incident and have opened a case of culpable homicide. Seven people died at the scene and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Jones did not immediately know exactly how many people were injured.

An eighth person died later in hospital.
