Johannesburg – Eight people have been killed in two separate accidents that took place over the last 24 hours on South Africa's roads.

On Monday evening, five people were killed and three others left injured when a small vehicle collided head-on with a 4x4 on the R616 in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, said ER24’s Russell Meiring in a statement.

ER24 paramedics found the two wrecked cars on opposite sides of the road, with the bodies of three men and two women lying around the smaller vehicle.

All five travelling in the small vehicle were declared dead at the scene, according to Meiring.

The three occupants from the 4x4 were only found to have sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to a provincial hospital.

Bakkie rear-ended

In a separate incident a few kilometres outside Middelburg, Mpumalanga, three women were declared dead on the scene after a bakkie rear-ended another bakkie on the R555 early on Tuesday morning.

Their bodies were found sprawled near one of the cars.

Ten others were injured. Two of them were critically injured, with one patient airlifted to a nearby hospital.

It is understood that there were people seated in the back of one of the bakkies. They were ejected when the two vehicles collided, Meiring said in a statement.

He said that local authorities were on the scene at both accidents to commence with investigations into the cause.
