Cape Town – Eight men accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in Nyanga last month will spend at least the next month behind bars.

The 8, aged between 18 and 20 years, heard this in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

During their appearance, the State announced it would oppose their release on bail.

The eight appeared distraught during proceedings.

“The State denies bail for the accused, the case against them is too serious,” State prosecutor Phumeza Mtuyedwa-Zondi told the court.

The men are accused of repeatedly raping a 13-year-old girl in a shack in Nyanga on November 11.

The are all first time offenders.

Magistrate Mymoena Ismail, standing in for Magistrate Goolam Bawa, postponed the matter until January 18 for a bail application.

Parents and others in the public gallery voiced their dismay with this and tried to hug the accused as they walked back to the court's holding cells.

Speaking to News 24, one of the parents, who did not want to be named, said that she believes her child is not guilty.

“We hoped that they’d be released in time for Christmas – now we have to wait another month,” she said.
