Johannesburg - The body of an eight-year-old boy who went missing on the Kariego River in Kenton-on-Sea, in the Eastern Cape, has been found, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said efforts to find the missing child began around 15.20 on Friday.

"The child had reportedly disappeared under water without warning while he and his male friend, believed to also be 8 years old, were swimming back and forth across the river during an incoming tide," Lambinon said.

It was suspected that the under currents during the incoming tide may have dragged the boy under water.

The NSRI was joined by the provincial emergency services, SA Police services and security services during the rescue operation. A member of the public also volunteered to use his private boat to assist in the search.

The boy's body was eventually located and recovered by the police's scuba diver under the water.
