80 hurt as bus overturns

2011-07-18 07:53

Durban - Eighty people were injured, 11 seriously, when a bus they were travelling in overturned on the N2 highway in Amanzimtoti on Monday morning, KwaZulu Natal paramedics said.

The carrier, Siyaya Couches, was en route from Queenstown to Durban, when it overturned near the Joyner Road offramp, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"The driver said that the front tyre blew out, causing him to lose control of the bus. It then overturned and landed on its side in the centre medium of the oncoming road."

The seriously injured included children, he said.

They were treated on scene for multiple injuries, before being transported to various hospitals in the Durban area.

Siyaya Couches??? I guess the bus was speeding down Twini Hill and the driver had the sun in his face and couldn't see where he was going.

You know that the article does indicate that the front tyre blew out and was the cause...I'm just saying... But it is funny how Siyaya "Couches" is the bus line... Wonder if it was leather couches, or plain sofas with wheels attached to it and going down the motorway.

come on guys accident is an accident it can happen to anyone

@dnrsa87 I know that section of the road well. If the bus was speeding down hill and the tyre blew, the driver would have been in a difficult situation to control the bus. He could well have been blinded by the sun and not seen where he could steer the bus to safely.

I get your point - couches & centre medium to name two basic spelling errors - but the accident did happen at around 02h00, so no sun to distract teh driver

... and here I am bitching about spelling, and can't even spell "the"! :)

  • Ann - 2011-07-18 11:30

I thought buses were only to transport around 60 people and they are all to be sitting? This is just criminal!!!!

  • 50something - 2011-07-18 11:34

Must say it is funny, please change to coaches and not couches - there is a suttle difference. hope the injured will recover soon.

      The word is subtle.

When the tyre blew and if the driver applied the foot brakes then yes the bus would overturn. I am not sure if the driver or the company educate the drivers of tyre blowouts and how to bring the vehicle to a stop safely.
