8th Sasol victim dies

2004-09-12 12:45
line

Johannesburg - Another victim of the Sasol blast has died, bringing the death toll from the explosion at the ethylene plant in Secunda, Mpumalanga to eight.

Highveld Medi-Clinic Hospital spokesperson Ben Otto said on Sunday a contract worker for Sasol died on Saturday morning from suspected multiple organ failure.

"His body was in shock. He had 30% burn wounds."

Otto, who could not identify the man, said an official post-mortem would be conducted.

Two other victims remained in the intensive care unit in critical and unstable conditions.

Three other workers were in the general ward in stable and satisfactory conditions.

The explosion, which occurred on September 1, has claimed the lives of six contractors and two Sasol employees. Over 100 people were injured.

The plant, part of Sasol's polymers chemical production division, was undergoing planned maintenance and there were several contractors on site at the time of the explosion.

PeggySven says... Maybe I missed something in Jacob Zuma's speech, but as far as I remember he did not have any immediate plans for, how did the ex premier put it? "What is worrying me a lot about this speech is that the premier did not speak about what is happening today in terms of poverty," ANC leader in the provincial legislature Lynne Brown said after the address. "How are we going to combat poverty today in this province? What are we going to do to get rid of inequalities?" She also said that the speech lacked vision as Zille had failed to mention how many government houses were to be built. I would have thought that as the budget for housing is allocated by central government, Provincial government can only build as many houses as they have money to build. What is even funnier is the fact that in every other province there is rampant corruption and lack of delivery, whereas in the Western Cape Service Delivery is rolled out as fast as the budget allows and 100% of the housing budget is spent every year with a clean audit report. Not heard of in any other province in South Africa. What a joke the CancER politicians are. Read the article...
