Johannesburg - The education authorities need to probe
violence in Gauteng schools after a 17-year-old girl was killed in Mohlakeng,
near Randfontein, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) said on
Tuesday.
"[We] cannot find the words to express fully our
feelings of shock and horror at the death... in Mohlakeng," said ACDP
provincial leader Lydia Meshoe.
"We extend our most heartfelt condolences to her
family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time."
A 15-year-old girl was expected to appear in the
Randfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for the alleged murder, the Star
reported.
She was reportedly accused of stabbing the 17-year-old
girl when they started fighting while walking on Friday.
Both girls were pupils at Lukhanyo Secondary School, in
Mohlakeng.
The Grade 9 pupil appeared in the Randfontein
Magistrate's Court on Monday and was denied bail.
In a statement, Meshoe said that when a Grade 10 girl
could be stabbed to death by a female schoolmate in broad daylight on her way
home from school, no one was safe.
"We call on the department of education to
investigate thoroughly the extent of violence in Gauteng schools and to come up
with both short-term and long-term plans to deal with it," she said.
These plans should include inviting God back into schools
through prayers and Bible readings in assemblies.
She said banishing God from education did not allow for
freedom and tolerance, as it simply created a vacuum where evil could flourish.
