Johannesburg - Government has redoubled efforts to ensure that the rights of South Africans are protected and upheld, the ANC said on Human Rights Day on Friday.

"In the 20 years of democracy we have made progress towards this vision," spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

"The ANC is committed to entrenching it - ensuring people's dignity by broadening access to basic services, improving access to justice, building safer communities, and defending the institutions set up to support our democracy."

The African National Congress said Human Rights Day reminded the country of the "countless" sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom.

"It is further an opportunity to assess progress as we redouble our efforts to ensure the realisation of our common vision of a united, non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society where everyone's human rights are protected and upheld."

Human Rights Day commemorates the Sharpeville massacre in 1960 when police shot dead 69 anti-apartheid protesters.
