Nelspruit - The ANC has achieved its goal of doing more to fight unemployment, poverty and equality in the past five years, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"Five years ago we made clarion call that, working together, we can do more, and we have worked together and we have done more," he said at an African National Congress dinner in Nelspruit.

"We are building on the work that had been done since 1994 to eradicate the legacy of apartheid," said Zuma, who is also president of the ANC.

He said that, looking back, the country had a good story to tell, and that the lives of millions of people had been improved.

"South Africa is a better country to live in now. For that we thank all South Africans for their hard work, dedication and commitment to make South Africa a better place," he said.

"Over the last five years this work was taken forward."

More people had been lifted out of extreme poverty, more jobs had been created, social grants extended and there was improved access to healthcare and education.

"We believe we made more progress, because we were more focused," Zuma said.

The ANC will officially launch its 2014 election manifesto at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Zuma, wearing a red and black jacket with a Chinese collar, was welcomed onto the stage with the song "Inde Lendlela" (the road is long) on Friday evening.

Dancers surrounded him and two girls gave him bouquets of flowers.
