ANC condemns Lonmin mine attacks

2012-08-16 12:01

Johannesburg - The ANC has condemned the violent protests at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, Rustenburg.

"We respect the workers' constitutional right to protest, but we disapprove the killing of innocent people associated to any of the unions," ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement on Thursday.

Mthembu said the party was pleased that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), and Lonmin Platinum Mine management had agreed to meet.

"We hope that an amicable solution will be arrived at quickly."

He called on the police to make sure that the people responsible for the murders were arrested.

Thousands of Lonmin rock drill operators started an illegal strike and protest march on Friday.

Ten people - two police officers, two security guards, three protesters and three other men - have been killed since then.

The protests are believed to be linked to rivalry between the NUM and Amcu about recognition agreements at the mine.

Workers also wanted higher wages. They claimed to be earning R4 000 a month, with those living outside the hostel earning an extra R1 000. Reported demands have included pay of R12 500 a month.

ANC is forever talking rubbish, they are the one's to blame for everything going wrong in this country. They should look themselves first in the mirror before criticising others.Thieves!

yup - they are inactive morons. I thought the anc are supposed to govern, do they not have the "power" to call the unions to order. Simply opening their mouths and saying "we condemn" has the same effect as me saying I condemn the anc. Result = 0

Condemning this violence is good and well, but how about re-introducing the appropriate punishment to fit the crime of murder. It is illogical to ignore what needs to be done. Given that the bulk of this countries population is sick and enough of the crime rate, I challenge you MR Government, to take the question of the death penalty to your citizens in a referendum. By ignoring the will of the people you are endangering their lives by making them live alongside lifes mutants.

Oh for heavens sake ANC, what the hell do you know? Rather just shut it than reveal how damn ignorant you are. The games over anyway, no one cares what the hell you condemn or praise. Just go away - quickly.
