Durban – KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Senzo Mchunu told delegates going to the National General Council not to be distracted with issues such as the “premier league”.

The "premier league" is allegedly made up of three premiers: David Mabuza of Mpumalanga, North West’s Supra Mahumapelo and the Free State’s Ace Magashule.

The three also chair the ANC in their provinces.

It is alleged that their plan is to entrench themselves as leaders or kingmakers for 2017, when the ANC will elect President Jacob’s Zuma’s successor.

“There is something coined in the media as the premier league. It does not relate to policies that we are going to discuss at the NGC so I don’t want you to burden yourselves with it.

“Let us not carry it on our shoulders we are going there to deal with policy issue. We are going there to try and change lives. But if such political issues are raised, we don’t need to be taken and then focus on side issues and then come back with nothing,” said Mchunu.

Central issue

He said KZN should not worry itself with the premier league but instead focus on the NGC.

“Some people will say because it has been raised in the media, it means it is true.

“The best thing in terms of how we move forward on this issue is to take an approach that we are going there for policy making issues and we will focus exclusively on policy issues.

“If such issues arise, it will help us to only discuss them during tea breaks and not make the central issues in our debates when it is time for serious work of making and implementing policy.”

Mchunu said policy should be the central issue that preoccupies the delegates at the NGC.

“If there are those that discuss it, listen and ask further questions so that you can make your own decisions on the matter.

“Don’t be taken with things that are said to be existing only to find that they do not exist, open your eyes and ears, you are not children,” said Mchunu.
