Durban - The ANC announced on Thursday that it would be deploying its heavyweights to KwaZulu-Natal this weekend.

This comes as the DA prepares for its KwaZulu-Natal elective conference at the Zululand Chamber of Business in Richards Bay on Saturday, where the position of provincial leader will be contested by incumbent Sizwe Mchunu MPL and eThekwini councillor Zwakele Mncwango.

The ruling party said it wanted its presence to be felt throughout the province as leaders visit various regions.

“Opposition parties are already feeling the winds blowing with a tsunami from afar and are probably looking for tiny spaces to hibernate,” said ANC spokesperson Sicelo Khuzwayo.

National executive committee (NEC) member Bheki Cele and provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala will lead an anti-xenophobia march at Ezakheni’s D Section from 12:00.

Khuzwayo said there would be a similar march on Saturday, led by the Lower South Coast region in Port Shepstone at 10:00.

“ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete will on Saturday address a Cadre’s Forum at Lakhis Sports Ground in Greytown from 13:00 and later she will speak at a gala dinner at Braeside in the Greater KwaDukuza Region’s Ballito,” said Khuzwayo.

The following day, Mbete will deliver a keynote address at Groutville Sports Ground where an ANC Freedom Day Rally will be held.

“NEC member Fikile Mbalula and Senzo Mchunu will be in Mtubatuba where they will lead the ANC soccer team that will lock horns with various teams from the local associations on Sunday April 26 at the Northdale Stadium,” said Khuzwayo.
