Johannesburg - The ANC has been asked by the Jewish community to act against hate speech following a Twitter post saying "Keep calm and kill Jews", The Star reported on Tuesday.

The SA Jewish Board of Deputies wrote a letter to the African National Congress on Sunday to act against hate speech on a Twitter account that was believed to belong to the ANC Youth League.

"We were appalled to learn that earlier that day (Sunday) via a Twitter site presumably used by the ANCYL, namely @ANCYLVote2014, a message calling for the killing of Jews was tweeted," the board said in its letter.

The board of deputies added that the propagation of such appalling hate speech was generating distress among its communities.

The party however distanced itself from the account.

ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza said the party did not encourage hate speech and would look into who created the account, as it was not an official one.

Khoza added that the ANC Youth League cannot express those views.

ANCYL statement

The ANC Youth League on Tuesday distanced itself from the Twitter account.

"This account is not managed or sanctioned by our national office or any of the ANC Youth League’s provincial and regional offices," spokesperson Bandile Masuku said in a statement.

"As the ANCYL, we distance the members and supporters of the ANCYL from all the statements and comments that have been issued [on] @ANCYLVote2014, including the recent Jewish hate comment."

The account was subsequently deleted from the social networking site.

The ANCYL called on its members and supporters to interact on social media with care and in a constitutionally accepted manner.
