Johannesburg - An ANC member was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle outside the Taung Magistrate's Court in North West on Thursday, police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the man was among hundreds of ANC members, from two factions, who had gathered at the court.

They were there for the appearance of a party member who had been arrested for shooting another member on Sunday.

He was to face a charge of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

"Police used stun grenades to separate the two groups who started throwing stones at each other.... As they dispersed, the man was stabbed," said Ngubane.

The attacker was not immediately arrested.

The stabbed man was treated at a local clinic and later laid a charge with the police.

"We will make an arrest soon," said Ngubane.

Sunday's shooting came amid a party dispute in the Magogong Village.

"One of the two fighting groups had a meeting at Magogong Primary School. The other group was not invited to the meeting, which was aimed at... discussing the delegation to the African National Congress' conference in Mangaung," said Ngubane.

"There was a prior agreement between the two groups that they will jointly hold a meeting for that purpose."

The uninvited group was apparently barred from entering the school premises by armed "security guards" and an argument broke out.

"One of the security guards inside the schoolyard drew a firearm and pointed [it at] a lady who was among the locked-out group, but no shot was fired," said Ngubane.

"[A] few moments after that, a shot was fired and that was when a man was hit in the chest."

He was in a serious, but stable condition in hospital.
