Pretoria - The ANC leadership needs an injection of energy, which will come from some of its younger members, ANC Youth League Tshwane chairperson Lesego Makhubela said on Thursday.

This energy would come from the generation referred to as the South African Youth Congress (Sayco), he told News24.

"We need to speak about Fikile Mbalula, Nathi Mthethwa, we need to speak about Malusi Gigaba.

"The energy of that generation must be injected into the leadership structures of the ANC. Because that generation should be the generation that takes us forward," Makhubela said.

This was the generation former ANC president Oliver Tambo referred to as the "young lions", he said.

Mbalula, Mthethwa and Gigaba were products of the ANCYL.

Grooming ground for ANC leaders

Makhubela said he believed the ANCYL was a grooming ground for ANC leaders.

"The youth league is a preparatory structure... Young people who are leading at various levels take over the leadership reins. The ANC Youth League has always provided reserves for the ANC," he said.

Makhubela is expected to stand for ANCYL president at next month's national elective congress.

The ANCYL leadership structures were disbanded in 2013.

Mbalula and Mthethwa have been part of the national task team preparing the league to go to congress.

In the past, the ANCYL has advocated for generational mix in the leadership of the mother body.

Last month, another ANCYL presidential hopeful Ronald Lamola also spoke about younger members being moved up into the higher echelons of the ANC.

Makhubela said young people needed to make sure they made it into the ranks of the ANC.

"When the time comes, the youth league must talk about injecting energy into the leadership," he said.

The ANCYL is holding its national elective congress next month and Makhubela is expected to stand for the position of president if nominated.

ANCYL members will be nominating their preferred candidate for the position and pronouncements were expected to be made next week.
